Quick clues and cryptic clues are different
A quick crossword clue usually asks for a synonym or direct definition. A clue such as “rapid (5)” might lead you to SWIFT. The number gives the answer length, and any crossing letters narrow the choice.
A cryptic clue normally contains both a definition and a separate wordplay route. The wordplay may use an anagram, hidden answer, abbreviation, reversal, insertion or two-part charade. For example, an indicator such as “mixed” can signal that nearby letters should be rearranged. The goal is not merely to find a fitting synonym; both halves of the clue should justify the same answer.
How known letters help
Write unknown positions as blanks and record every confirmed crossing letter. Length, first letter, final letter and repeated characters can remove most candidates before meaning is considered. MyWordHub’s Word Finder can search by length, starting letters, ending letters and required sequences.
